FARMERSVILLE, Calif. — The countdown is on for residents of Farmersville to see the fruits of their labor and enjoy the new Sports Park Complex. Phase one is expected to be completed in June.

It took seven years of planning and nearly a $1 million from various funding sources (including California Proposition 84).

“Everything’s all in to get this done and make something happen for the city of Farmersville,” said Landscape Architect Kay Hutmacher.

Hutmacher says phase one will be completed within a few months. It includes grassy fields for open play and sports like soccer and football, and a natural park with trees, trails, and shaded places to have a picnic.

It will be an urban forest, for the not-so-urban city of Farmersville. “We’re planting hundreds of trees so those trees will grow and eventually create shade and sequester carbon and do all the good things urban forests will do,” Hutmacher said. “So we’ll right here in the center of Farmersville be able to have a nice shady natural kind of environment.”

“It’s going to be taking water that comes in through rain and it’s going to percolate that down into the ground and increase our water levels,” said Farmersville Mayor Greg Gomez. “It’s also going to be removing carbon from the air.”

Gomez calls it a working park, one that will benefit the community for decades.

He says it’s already brought the community together in a special way. “Our community, our sports groups especially have come together and really poured their hearts into this,” Gomez said. “They’ve given us time and they will give us even more time through some of the work days we have scheduled in the future.”

Sometime later in June, the community will be welcomed back for a day to help plant trees and shrubs. They’ll also have a day dedicated to building and painting park benches.
