Somerset, NJ – A highly-anticipated Central Jersey sports complex – complete with indoor and outdoor fields, a massive obstacle course, and an inflatable dome – will begin its phased opening in just a few months.

The Apex Sports and Events Complex, its developers say, will put an end to athletes and families from Hillsborough having to travel back and forth to neighboring towns for practices and games.

The complex’s outdoor fields are scheduled to open in March and the indoor facilities should be ready to go in September, according to business development and events director Fred Ewig.

The complex will have three outdoor turf fields. The indoor section will have a fourth artificial turf field, basketball and volleyball courts, rock climbing, and a kids adventure area modeled after the agility course on the television show “American Ninja Warrior.”

Apex hasn’t limited itself to just sports. There will also be an arcade, virtual reality space, and a ropes course, inside the 123,395 square-foot complex.

The sports center sits next to The Mountainview Park Complex, a county park, and was bought in a land swap with Somerset County. Owner Gregg Wilke purchased the 40 acres of land in exchange for turning over 19.5 acres of land he owns on nearby Hillsborough Road.

The Hillsborough Road site will become part of the county’s farmland preservation program.

Construction of the complex is expected cost $23 million.

“Its a breath of fresh air to think that this group of investors came together to have something like this in town,” said Hillarie McGovern- Scannelli, a Hillsborough resident whose children participate in sports.

McGovern- Scannelli said she is excited for Apex to open because there isn’t anything like it in town. She hopes the complex will make things easier for parents whose kids are enrolled in sports because they often have to travel to other towns to play games, even if it is two Hillsborough teams playing against each other.

The complex was originally scheduled to open in the fall but unexpected construction delays and site clean-up pushed construction back by several months. Building progress is now in full swing, Ewing said.

“I was born and raised in Hillsborough, and we’ve never had a place for kids to go outside of a few parks, and really not anywhere they could go in bad weather,” said Mayor Doug Tomson. “This will give our children just a place they can go during the winter the summer and the spring and have access to high-quality fields.”

As part of Apex’s private-public partnership with Hillsborough, 400 hours of play time on two of the turf fields have been reserved for the Hillsborough Township Parks and Recreation Department, at no charge to the department, said general manager Sandra Weingart.

One of the most highly anticipated areas in the complex is a multi-purpose field that will be covered by an inflatable dome, with 86,000 square feet of field space inside, and is climate controlled.

Although it is not open yet, Apex is already getting requests to book the space for events that range from dog shows to baton twirling.

“We’re trying to get people off the couch and be more active,” Weingart said. “We want to be a place that has something for everyone and all activity levels. I just bought pickleball equipment for our senior citizens, and we just finalized our youth development programs for five and six-year-olds.”
