THIS WEEK’S FIELD TIP
Fall renovation is just beginning in the far northern parts of the country and in the coming weeks it will work it’s way south. Aerification of your turfgrass should be one of the chores at the top of your list. This is the process of punching holes or removing cores from the soil down to various depths. Aerification breathes new life into fields by allowing exchange of oxygen down to the roots, it relieves compaction in the soil and helps control your thatch layer, it improves percolation of rain and irrigation water, it allows easier access to fertilizer and pesticide applications for the turf plant, and many other benefits. Click here to view a presentation on aerification from the 2014 Sports Turf Managers Association Annual Conference. Whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor to perform the job for you, choose the method of aerification that will best work for you in the time you have available. And remember, sometimes you have to beat turf up to help it be stronger and to look and play better. Visit Ballfields.com for more tips and the groundskeeper’s podcast…
