You know the most common problem areas… the mound in front of the pitching rubber and the batter’s box. Metal cleats dig into the soil more, creating deeper holes. Rubber or plastic cleats will compact the soil more than dig. These problem areas can become extremely hard from the compaction due to rubber cleats, especially on fields with younger players wearing rubber cleats. To withstand the wear and tear, you’ll need to fortify these areas with one of two types of fortification: clay fortification or barrier mats.
